Exhibition Synopsis -

In 2020, as racism once again raised its ugly head on the national landscape, Maddy Fraioli (fiber artist, teacher, master potter) conceived of a spectacular project based on the block prints of Elizabeth Catlett.

Elizabeth Catlett was an African American sculptor and graphic artist (April 15, 1915 - April 2, 2012).  Much of her work was devoted to the experience of African Americans.

In the 1940’s Ms Catlett created 15 powerful block print images of African American women.  Her goal was to depict the “oppression, struggles and achievements of ‘The Negro woman.’”

A group of 14 rug hookers from across the country has reproduced the 15 prints as hooked pieces.  The project is called “Lift Every Voice”.
